FPGA embedded systems development for optical
communications

Position Overview:

We are seeking a motivated student to join our team for an exciting focused on the development of electronics signal processing for a space mission using laser-based systems for optical communication.

This project involves the design and implementation of advanced electronic systems for real-time signal processing in space applications. The  student will support in implementation of processing capabilities for laser-based systems. Open topics are FPGA ADC read-out for real-time applications, hardware design, implementation of a frequency counter, or development of analogue electronics. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a space project and gain hands-on experience with development of innovative solutions.

Tasks:

  • Review documentation to understand project requirements thoroughly.

  • Design and implementation on different topics:

    • FPGA-based ADC read-out systems ensuring real-time processing capabilities.

    • Develop hardware for frequency counters and other signal processing components.

    • analogue electronics circuits for high-precision signal acquisition and processing.

  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists to integrate and test the laser-based system.

  • Conduct experiments, analyze data, and contribute to the documentation and reporting of project results.

Required Skills:

  • Basic proficiency in PCB development.

  • Completion of a basic course in VHDL or equivalent knowledge.

  • Familiarity with C programming and microcontroller programming.

  • Proficiency in developing and testing analogue electronics circuits.

  • Knowledge of low-level communication protocols such as UART, I2C, or SPI is preferred but not mandatory.

  • Knowledge of optical systems and laser technology is a plus.

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

  • Previous experience with hardware development and microcontroller programming.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to document and present work effectively.

Duration and Location:

  • This position is available as a Master's thesis project.

  • The duration can be flexible based on the candidate's availability and circumstances. The location will be in our offices in Munich.

Application Instructions:

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their resume, cover letter, transcripts, and any relevant reference or project work to personal@em-munich.de. Please include "master thesis for laser signal processing" in the subject line of your email.

Join us in this exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge FPGA development and gain valuable skills in hardware design and software implementation. We look forward to welcoming a dedicated student to our team!
